The gasoline engine has no direct role in operating the vehicle, but is only used to charge the battery to serve the electric motor.

Introduced for the first time at last year's Guangzhou Auto Show, Changan claims that Hunter is the first pickup truck in the world to use a gasoline engine to charge the battery to operate an electric motor (EREV). Hunter has up to 8 versions, with prices ranging from 139,900 to 216,900 yuan (19,450-31,150 USD).

The versions only use a front-wheel drive electric motor with a capacity of 174 horsepower, while the 4-wheel drive version has an additional 94-horsepower electric motor on the front axle. All use a 31.18kWh lithium iron phosphate battery pack, enough for the car to run 180km purely on electricity, and 1,031km with the additional support of the gasoline engine.

To support battery charging on the go, Hunter uses a gasoline engine code JL486ZQ6, 2.0L capacity, giving a maximum capacity of 188 horsepower. This engine only serves as a generator, not directly operating the vehicle. It is also known as a serial hybrid engine, similar to the type on the Nissan Kicks sold in Vietnam.

Changan Hunter has a simple appearance like any double cab pickup truck, without any special highlights. The footrest around the body of the vehicle is intended to protect from impacts and scratches. The vehicle's front exit angle is 29 degrees, while the rear exit angle is 27 degrees. The relatively high ground clearance promises to give the vehicle impressive off-road capabilities.
