 The catastrophic mountain flooding in Nepal that killed more than 1,300 people was driven by a complex web of climate and seismic processes that made it nearly impossible to predict, according to an international team of scientists.

The catastrophe began Aug. 26 when a massive collapse of rock and ice near the Nepal-China border triggered a high-speed debris flood that swept away border posts,


market towns and hydropower plants along a key river corridor. Government estimates put the immediate economic damage at $2.7 billion — equivalent to 6.7% of Nepal’s gross domestic product. Physical damage accounted for $1.8 billion, with an additional $883 million in economic losses.

Nepal has already sought compensation from the United Nations Fund for responding to Loss and Damage, a nascent climate-aid system set up to help developing nations deal with the worst impacts of global warming. The study’s


confirmation of human-caused warming as a factor provides crucial scientific backing that is expected to embolden Nepal’s claim, experts say.


“There is no doubt that climate change is one of the drivers, and therefore it needs to be discussed in the context of loss and damage,” said Friederike Ott


o, professor of climate science at Imperial College London and co-founder of World Weather Attribution. “These are the events that are clearly linked to human-induced climate change, and that clearly have unavoidable loss and damage.”


At its core, the disaster was driven by water destabilizing weakened rock from within, according to the study. Heavy snowfall in late 2025 followed by extreme summer heat sent massive volumes of meltwater deep into mountain crevices that had been fractured by the 2015 earthquake. As permafrost thawed and trapped fluid, the mountain face lost its structural integrity until a massive slab of rock and ice broke free.
