Apple appears to be giving its ultra-thin iPhone another chance.

The company is reportedly preparing the iPhone Air 2, a successor to the first-generation iPhone Air that could arrive in early 2027. While the original model attracted plenty of attention for its remarkably slim and lightweight design, it also faced criticism over two major compromises: battery capacity and camera versatility.

Now, new leaked renders suggest Apple may be preparing some important changes that could make the second-generation model considerably more appealing.

The First iPhone Air Had Some Significant Compromises

Apple introduced the first iPhone Air on September 19 last year, positioning it as an ultra-thin alternative to the company's conventional iPhone lineup.

Its slim design was undoubtedly its most distinctive characteristic. However, making a smartphone exceptionally thin inevitably created some engineering challenges.

The phone came with a relatively small 3,149mAh battery, while photography was handled by a single 48MP Fusion rear camera.

On paper, a single camera may sound disappointing for a modern premium smartphone. However, Apple used computational photography and sensor cropping to squeeze more functionality out of the hardware. The system could provide 2x optical-quality zoom and support a next-generation Portrait mode.

Nevertheless, there were still several notable omissions.

The iPhone Air lacked:

  • An ultrawide camera

  • A dedicated telephoto camera

  • Spatial video recording

  • Macro photography capabilities

For users who regularly take different types of photos and videos, these limitations could become frustrating rather quickly.

Some Owners Apparently Wanted a More Conventional iPhone

The compromises did not work for everyone.

Some iPhone Air owners reportedly struggled to adapt to the smaller battery and limited camera system. A number of users eventually switched to the iPhone 17 Pro or iPhone 17 Pro Max, even after paying extra to make the upgrade.

That is an interesting outcome because it suggests the ultra-thin design alone wasn't enough to compensate for the missing features.

There are also reports that the iPhone Air experienced unusually rapid depreciation, losing approximately 47.7% of its value after only 10 weeks. Weak consumer demand and a relatively sluggish second-hand market were reportedly among the factors behind the decline.

For a premium Apple product, that's a particularly striking figure.

In my opinion, the first-generation iPhone Air demonstrated an important lesson: consumers may appreciate extreme thinness, but they still expect a premium phone to deliver the basics exceptionally well—especially battery life and cameras.

Apple Doesn't Appear Ready to Abandon the Idea

Despite the mixed response, Apple is reportedly continuing development of the Air family.

Recently, leaker Jon Prosser shared what he described as early renders of the iPhone Air 2, offering a possible glimpse at Apple's next ultra-thin smartphone.

The most significant rumored change is on the back.

Instead of relying on a single camera, the iPhone Air 2 could reportedly feature two 48MP cameras: a primary camera and an ultrawide camera.

That would represent a meaningful improvement over the original model.

An ultrawide camera would give users considerably more flexibility when photographing landscapes, architecture, groups of people, and other situations where the standard lens isn't wide enough.

More importantly, adding a second camera could address one of the most common complaints about the original iPhone Air without completely abandoning its thin-and-light philosophy.

Apple May Redesign Face ID to Make Room

Adding another camera to an ultra-thin smartphone isn't as straightforward as simply placing another sensor on the back.

Every internal component has to compete for extremely limited space.

According to Jon Prosser, Apple could redesign the Face ID system to create additional room inside the chassis for the second rear camera.

If accurate, this would demonstrate how seriously Apple is approaching the engineering challenge.

The iPhone Air 2 is expected to retain the titanium construction used by the first-generation model. Keeping the premium material while adding additional hardware would require careful internal redesign.

This could also give Apple valuable experience in making high-end components fit into increasingly thin devices—something that may become even more important if the company continues pursuing future ultra-thin and foldable products.

A 2nm A20 Chip Could Improve Both Speed and Efficiency

The next-generation iPhone Air is also rumored to receive a major processor upgrade.

According to the leak, the device could use Apple's A20 or A20 Pro chip, manufactured using a 2nm process.

Moving to a smaller semiconductor process could potentially bring improvements in both performance and power efficiency.

That second advantage may be particularly important for the iPhone Air.

The first-generation model's thin design limited the amount of space available for its battery. If Apple continues prioritizing a slim chassis, improving the efficiency of the processor could help compensate for some of the limitations imposed by a smaller battery.

In other words, Apple may be trying to solve the thin-phone problem from two directions: fitting more hardware into less space while simultaneously making that hardware more efficient.

But the iPhone Air 2 Could Cost More

There is one potential downside for buyers.

According to the same report, Apple could increase the price of the iPhone Air 2 by approximately $50, or around 1.3 million VND.

A modest price increase may not sound dramatic, but it could become significant when combined with the already premium positioning of the Air lineup.

Apple will therefore have to convince customers that the additional camera, newer processor, and other improvements justify the higher price.

That may be easier to do than with the first-generation model if Apple successfully addresses its biggest weaknesses.

Early 2027 Could Be a Busy Time for Apple's iPhone Lineup

The iPhone Air 2 is reportedly expected to launch in early 2027, alongside the standard iPhone 18 and the more affordable iPhone 18e.

This would give consumers several distinct choices.

The standard iPhone 18 could target users looking for a conventional flagship experience, while the iPhone 18e could appeal to more price-conscious buyers. Meanwhile, the Air 2 would be positioned around thinness, light weight, and a more distinctive design.

That segmentation could make more sense than trying to make the Air appeal to everyone.

Can the iPhone Air 2 Redeem the Ultra-Thin Concept?

The first iPhone Air proved that Apple could build an exceptionally thin smartphone, but it also showed the limitations of that approach.

The challenge for Apple now is finding the right balance.

Consumers clearly enjoy lightweight and thin phones. But most aren't willing to give up too much battery life or camera functionality simply to save a few millimeters of thickness.

Adding a second 48MP camera, introducing a more efficient 2nm processor, and retaining the titanium construction could therefore be exactly the kind of improvements the Air needs.

Of course, these specifications remain based on reports and leaks rather than Apple's official announcement, so the final product could be different.

Still, if Apple can make the iPhone Air 2 nearly as thin as its predecessor while improving camera versatility and power efficiency, the second-generation model could be much easier to recommend.

The first Air may have been Apple's experiment.

The Air 2 could be the version that shows whether the experiment was actually worth pursuing.
