iPhone 17 Pro Max Remains a Top Choice in Vietnam’s Premium Smartphone Market Despite Minimal Price Cuts

Nearly a year after its launch, the iPhone 17 Pro Max continues to demonstrate remarkable staying power in Vietnam's premium smartphone market.

While many smartphones typically receive significant discounts as they approach the end of their product cycle, Apple's flagship has followed a different path. Its price has fallen by only around 5% from the original listed price, yet consumer demand has remained stable.

The iPhone 17 Pro Max officially went on sale in September 2025 and is now approaching the final stage of its lifecycle, with the next-generation iPhone 18 Pro lineup expected to take its place. Even so, the device continues to attract buyers who are willing to pay a premium for Apple's most advanced conventional iPhone.

A Surprisingly Strong Price Performance

Compared with previous generations, the iPhone 17 Pro Max has experienced relatively little price movement since its launch.

This is particularly noticeable when compared with the iPhone 16 Pro Max. At one point, the previous-generation model reportedly dropped to around 29 million VND for the 256GB version, representing a discount of approximately 15% from its original listed price.

The iPhone 17 Pro Max has behaved quite differently.

The 256GB version is currently being offered by retailers for around 36 million VND, only about 5% below its original price.

That relatively small reduction suggests that the model has retained stronger value throughout its lifecycle than its predecessor.

According to information from retailers in Vietnam, several factors may be contributing to the stable pricing. One important issue is the changing cost of key components, including RAM and processors. These cost pressures may have limited Apple's ability or willingness to make significant adjustments to pricing for older-generation products.

Strong Demand Even Without Major Discounts

Normally, consumers expect flagship smartphones to become more attractive as prices fall over time.

The iPhone 17 Pro Max appears to challenge that assumption.

Vietnamese retailers report that sales of the device have remained relatively stable and have not experienced a significant decline compared with the previous generation.

Another retailer noted that demand for premium smartphones continues to be healthy, helping the iPhone 17 Pro Max maintain consistent sales even though its price has not changed dramatically.

This is an important point because it suggests that price is only one part of the buying decision.

For many customers shopping in the premium segment, factors such as camera quality, performance, battery life, long-term software support, and overall ecosystem value can be just as important as getting the biggest possible discount.

In my opinion, this is one of the reasons Apple's flagship strategy continues to work well. Buyers spending more than 30 million VND on a smartphone are often thinking about how long they can use the device, rather than simply focusing on the lowest price available today.

The iPhone Air Has Taken a Very Different Path

The contrast becomes even more obvious when looking at the iPhone Air.

Among Apple's 2025 iPhone models, the Air reportedly experienced the largest price reductions.

Originally launched at approximately 32 million VND, the device has at times been discounted by as much as 10 million VND. Prices at physical retailers have fallen to around 23 million VND, while some e-commerce platforms have offered promotional prices below 22 million VND.

That represents a dramatically different market performance from the iPhone 17 Pro Max.

The comparison highlights an important reality of the smartphone market: consumers do not always respond to every new product concept in the same way.

The iPhone Air may offer a distinctive ultra-thin design, but the Pro Max continues to appeal to buyers looking for the most complete flagship experience.

Competition Is Fierce, but the iPhone Still Dominates

The premium smartphone segment is far from lacking competition.

The iPhone 17 Pro Max currently competes with several major Android flagships, including the Samsung Galaxy S26 Ultra, OPPO Find X9 Pro, and vivo X300 Pro.

These devices offer powerful processors, advanced camera systems, large batteries, and premium displays.

However, sales data from Vietnamese retailers reportedly shows that the iPhone 17 Pro Max continues to hold a dominant position within this high-end segment.

That doesn't necessarily mean competing phones are inferior. Instead, it demonstrates the continuing strength of the iPhone brand and Apple's ecosystem among Vietnamese consumers.

For many buyers, switching to another platform involves more than simply comparing specifications. Existing Apple users may already own AirPods, Apple Watches, Macs, or other Apple products, making the iPhone part of a larger connected ecosystem.

Vietnamese Buyers Continue to Favor 256GB and 512GB Models

Consumer preferences in Vietnam have remained largely consistent with previous years.

The 256GB and 512GB versions continue to be among the most popular configurations, largely because they offer a practical balance between storage capacity and price.

This makes sense for modern smartphone users.

High-resolution photos, 4K video, mobile games, and large applications can quickly consume storage space. At the same time, the highest-capacity models can become significantly more expensive.

For many buyers, 256GB or 512GB provides enough room for long-term use without pushing the total price into the most expensive tier.

A Strong Start Followed by Stable Performance

During the initial launch period, the iPhone 17 Pro Max generated a noticeable surge in sales.

Over the course of nearly a year, however, overall sales performance has reportedly remained close to that of its predecessor rather than dramatically exceeding it.

This suggests that the phone's success has been based more on sustained demand than an explosive long-term sales advantage.

That distinction is important.

A spectacular launch can generate headlines, but maintaining demand throughout an entire product cycle is arguably more valuable. The iPhone 17 Pro Max appears to have achieved relatively consistent interest even as it approaches the arrival of the next generation.

Why Are Buyers Still Choosing the iPhone 17 Pro Max?

Price clearly remains an important consideration, but it is not the only reason consumers choose a premium smartphone.

Buyers are also paying close attention to:

  • Overall performance

  • Camera capabilities

  • Battery life

  • Long-term usability

  • Software support

  • The broader ecosystem

  • The ability to retain value over time

The iPhone 17 Pro Max appears to benefit from this combination of factors.

Its relatively stable resale and retail value may also make the higher initial price easier for some buyers to accept. A smartphone that holds its value better can potentially reduce the financial impact when the owner eventually decides to upgrade.

Final Thoughts

The iPhone 17 Pro Max is proving that a major price reduction isn't always necessary to maintain strong consumer demand.

Nearly a year after its debut, the device remains one of the most attractive options in Vietnam's premium smartphone market despite selling for only around 5% less than its original listed price.

While competing Android flagships continue to push the boundaries of hardware specifications, the iPhone 17 Pro Max benefits from a combination of performance, cameras, battery life, long-term usability, and the strength of Apple's ecosystem.

Perhaps the most interesting lesson is this: premium smartphone buyers are not simply searching for the cheapest flagship available. They are looking for a device they believe will continue delivering value long after the purchase.

As the iPhone 18 Pro generation approaches, the iPhone 17 Pro Max may be entering the final chapter of its lifecycle—but based on its stable pricing and continued demand, it appears to be leaving the market in a very strong position.
