Former National General Loss Rep and Mom Charged With Fake Claims Scam

A former loss representative for National General Insurance Co. an

d his mother allegedly ran a scheme in 2022 that involved false claims, a fake towing company and a $141,000 loss for the insurer.

Horace Kelly, 40, and his mom, Greta Patterson, a 62-year-old minister, were booked into jail in Coffee County in s

outheast Georgia after a months-long investigation, according to the Georgia Office of Insurance Commissioner and local news outlets.

Investigators said the scheme worked like this: Kelly, while on the job, created fake insurance claims then issued ch

ecks totaling $146,167 over a seven-month period, Douglas Now news site and Atlanta News First reported Wednesday. Patterson and Kelly allegedly cashed or depo

sited more than 100 checks in 2022. Evidence showed that some of

the money ended up in Patterson’s personal bank account, authorities said.

The Lowndes County Sheriff’s Office initiated the investigation in August 2022 then notified the commissioner’s offic

e. Kelly and Patterson were charged with insurance fraud and have been released on bond.

National General policyholders were not aware that claims had be

en filed on their behalf, the insurance commissioner’s office told one news outlet.

The investigation is continuing and more charges may result.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, which opened a probe in October into Waymo vehicles near school buses, had asked the self-dr

iving car company on Wednesday to answer questions about the Texas incidents by January 20.

“Holding the highest safety standards means recognizing when our behavior should be better. As a result, w

e have made the decision to file a voluntary software recall with NHTSA related to appropriately slowing and stopping in these scenarios,” Waymo Ch

ief Safety Officer Mauricio Pena said in a statement.

Pena added the company believes software updates that have been implemented meaningfully improved performance.

Waymo said a software issue contributed to self-driving vehicles initially slowing or stopping for a school bus then proceeding.

The recent software update will be applied under the recall, and a W

aymo spokesperson said the company “will continue to track and implement more updates as needed.”
