At MWC 2025, Xiaomi made a big impression by introducing a new Android smartphone concept for photography enthusiasts.
This smartphone concept from Xiaomi features a Modular Optical System, which is designed to allow users to attach custom lenses.

The system uses a 35mm f/1.4 lens combined with a 100MP Type 4/3 sensor, which Xiaomi claims is the largest among smartphone sensors available. The lens is attached to the body via magnets, making it easy to install.
To overcome the latency during connection, Xiaomi has developed a 10Gbps LaserLink system with fast wireless data transmission between the phone and the module.
The lens can be attached to the camera body via magnets.
Notably, the Modular Optical System does not require a separate power source, but draws power from the device it is attached to. This design also helps reduce mass, with the 6G lens system only slightly thicker than a phone.
While the idea of an Android smartphone dedicated to photography is appealing, Xiaomi has announced that it has no plans to commercialize the product at this time. The company says it is listening to customer feedback to consider future developments.
Xiaomi has no intention of commercializing this idea yet.
In fact, the idea of modular smartphones is not new, for example, Sony has introduced the QX100 and Xiaomi also has the idea of Xiaomi 12S Ultra with a 35mm Leica lens. However, the difference in Xiaomi's idea this time is that the lens module includes the camera sensor, thereby helping to create a new step forward in mobile photography technology.
