New breakthrough helps say goodbye to smartphone battery explosions

Researchers at Cornell University (USA) have just announced a breakthrough discovery that could put an end to smartphone battery explosions.

Solving battery explosions is an issue that many companies are aiming for.

Smartphone batteries exploding has been a concern for years. In particular, in 2022, there were many reports of iPhone batteries catching fire and bursting into flames. This makes improving battery technology more urgent than ever.

There have been many cases of battery explosions causing serious consequences.

There have been many cases of battery explosions causing serious consequences.

Lithium-ion batteries, one of the most important inventions of the modern era, have helped power many electronic devices, from smartphones like the iPhone and Android to laptops. However, they still pose many stability risks, which has prompted many scientists and engineers to search for solutions to improve battery design.

To address the problem of exploding smartphone batteries, a team at Cornell University has developed a new type of porous crystal that could be a safer alternative to the traditional liquid lithium-ion batteries that companies like Apple are trying to introduce. One of the biggest challenges the new battery technology aims to address is the formation of dendrites (thin conductive fibers that often form inside lithium-ion batteries, reducing the battery cell's lifespan and causing fires) between the anode and cathode when using liquid electrolytes.

Solving battery explosions is an issue that many companies are aiming for.

The researchers came up with a sensible solution that combines the safety of solid-state batteries with the flexibility of liquid batteries. They used a molecular cage and three macroscopic rings, both of which have pores that allow ions to move around. In this way, they created enough space for ions to be stored and moved efficiently.

Ultimately, the team achieved good conductivity with the new crystalline battery. These findings, published in the Journal of the American Chemical Society, offer hope for a safer future in battery technology.
