In 2024, foldable phones finally get the most important thing right – form factor!
After years of Samsung sticking to the Galaxy Fold design, a number of foldable phones with completely different designs have appeared.
The OnePlus Open, Honor Magic V3, the recent Pixel 9 Pro Fold, and a few others have completely different designs from Samsung's products.
How to open a foldable smartphone?
Over the past few years, all the engineering efforts have been focused on finding the perfect hinge and how to reduce wrinkles.
But how do users open the hinge?

We've seen a number of different approaches to this. For example, the Huawei Mate XS from 2020 used a button to turn on the screen.
Cool! But it's also... weird and a bit awkward, as the setup increases the risk of accidentally dropping the phone.
Samsung's Galaxy Fold originally had curved edges but has recently switched to flat edges, and users will have to force the two halves of the screen apart to open the phone.
This isn't difficult, but it's not easy either. Others like the super-slim Honor Magic V3 have rounded edges, so prying them apart is a little easier.
But none of these are perfect.
A simple solution
Meet the Vivo X Fold 3 Pro, a phone with a complicated name but a super simple opening design.
What Vivo did was simply tilt the edges a little bit to make opening the phone much easier.
It's a small detail, but it makes it simpler to use.

If you’ve used a foldable phone before, you’ll be familiar with the feeling of fumbling around, fumbling, and almost dropping your phone.
But what if we could avoid this with a design that actually helps our hands?
Imperfect design
Of course, the Vivo phone's design isn't perfect yet. Opening a phone is an action that
we do many times a day, so finding the optimal design for this action will be an important step in making foldable phones more popular.

In an ideal world, foldable smartphones would have a finely tuned spring system that would allow users to open the phone with just one hand.
before we get to that design, small design changes like those made by Vivo are welcome. These are changes that improve the ease of use of these fantastic, futuristic phones.
