Galaxy Z Fold 6 will help "enlighten" the folding screen iPhone

Samsung plans to increase the thickness of the Ultra Thin Glass (UTG) panel covering the folding screen OLED panel, with the Galaxy Z Fold 6 will be the first phone to have this thick UTG coating.

A report from The Elec said that Samsung will increase the UTG thickness from 30 micrometers to 50 micrometers, making the durability of the panel on the Galaxy Z Fold 6 better. Thicker glass will also be more durable and less likely to break. Even if this results in increased thickness, it will be appreciated if it does not affect the longevity of the device.

Of course, Samsung will not accept increasing the thickness if the new screen cannot pass durability tests. Previously, screens with UTG panels available on the Galaxy Z Fold and Z Flip models could fold and unfold up to 200,000 times.

The report also notes that Samsung introduced a waterdrop hinge on the Galaxy Z Fold 5 and Z Flip 5 models last year to reduce the visibility of wrinkles. Most likely, the Galaxy Z Fold 6 will also apply similar hinge technology combined with the new UTG panel.

Not stopping, Samsung is expected to change the hinge design again next year to further reduce wrinkles, and the company will also increase the thickness of the new UTG panel. Of course, the company has not yet made a final decision on the folding screen on the Galaxy Z Fold 7 and Z Flip 7.

The Elec also mentioned the folding screen iPhone in its report, which seemed to imply that Samsung's approach could influence Apple's decision. The company from Cupertino asked Samsung and LG to develop technology that completely eliminates wrinkles. Samsung Display has hinted at this multiple times without naming Apple as a potential customer.

But the new thicker UTG panel will be implemented on the Galaxy Z Fold 6 and Z Flip 6.

Samsung is the leading manufacturer of folding screen smartphones and often criticizes Apple for not having a folding screen iPhone. However, the Korean company still wants to be the supplier of panels for all folding screen devices from Apple, including folding screen iPhones. This will create a significant source of profit for the company, especially when folding screen phones are expected to become a mainstream trend once Apple enters it.

If the UTG upgrade is accurate, Samsung may mention it during the upcoming Galaxy Z Fold 6 and Z Flip 6 launch event. Rumors say the Korean company will do this around mid-July.
