Galaxy wins iPhone in sales but... not significantly

The fact that Samsung phones "beat" Apple's iPhone sales is not an exception, they happen in accordance with the annual cycle.

The gloomy period of the global phone market over the past two years is now over, smartphone shipments increased to nearly 290 million units in the first quarter of the year alone. While iPhone sales have declined, Samsung has returned to the top as the world's largest phone maker.

In the last quarter, after launching the iPhone 15 Series, Apple "beat" Samsung to win the position of top phone manufacturer. With the launch of the Galaxy S24 series and weak iPhone sales in the first quarter in China, Samsung's lead is much more convincing.

Samsung's "ascension" is... normal

According to IDC, in the first quarter, Samsung phones currently account for 20.8% of the market share, taking the leading position from Apple. The company has strongly promoted Galaxy AI with the Galaxy S24 series.

Another market research company - Canalys also made similar observations about the change in global phone market share in the first quarter. formation, Samsung phones ranked first with 20% market share and Apple phones ranked second. two with 16%.

Samsung far exceeded its mobile device sales target in the first quarter (55 million units), reaching 64.5 million devices (including: phones and tablets), boosted by the new Galaxy S24 series, especially the Galaxy S24 Ultra.

However, Samsung's market share in the first 3 months of the year actually decreased compared to 22% market share in the first quarter of last year - when the company announced and released the Galaxy S23 series.

Therefore, the Galaxy S24 Series did not bring too much success to Samsung. Mr. Nabila Popal, research director at IDC said:

The smartphone market is growing again after two years of turmoil.

First, we continue to see growth in value and average selling price (ASP) as consumers opt for more expensive devices that last longer.

Second, there is a shift in power among the top five smartphone companies, which will likely continue as market participants adjust their strategies in the post-recovery world. Xiaomi is coming back strong after a big decline in the past two years and Transsion has kept the top 6 with strong growth in the international market.

Apple's "decline" is a familiar cycle

On the other hand, according to many prominent reports, Apple's iPhone sales "dropped" significantly in the first quarter and are currently far behind Samsung in terms of shipments. iPhone only accounted for 17.3% of the smartphone market share in the first quarter.

This is explained by the continuous rise of Chinese smartphone brands. At the same time, the Chinese government and companies have begun restricting employees from using Apple devices, helping boost sales of Huawei phones.

Transsion ranked 6th largest smartphone manufacturer globally in the first quarter of 2024.

Xiaomi is currently the world's third largest phone maker with a 14% market share thanks to a number of low-cost products, followed by Oppo and OnePlus as well as Transsion - a company that sells many low-cost phones in Africa. That trend has been going on for a while, and the advantages of the iPhone 15 and Galaxy S24 have little to do with sales.

Apple's sales increase in the fourth quarter and a "slump" in the following quarter - giving way to Samsung is the norm, not the exception. According to each year's schedule, Apple will reach its "peak" iPhone sales in the fourth quarter after announcing the new iPhone line in the third quarter of the year. On the other hand, Samsung usually launches its flagship line in the first quarter. Thanks to that, the company has achieved a "huge" sales increase.

Unlike Apple, the Korean technology tycoon will increase smartphone sales thanks to the second major launch of folding screen phones in the third quarter, while also selling a series of mid-range and affordable phone models. On the other hand, Apple is still flush with money because the average selling price of its iPhones is much higher.

In short, Apple always grows in Quarter 4 and Samsung will return to the "throne" in Quarter 1 of next year. Therefore, it is impossible to confirm the strengths of Galaxy phones compared to iPhones.

In China, both Samsung and Apple phones have seen their sales decline due to phones from Oppo, Xiaomi or Huawei. The phones of these brands even "surpass" both "big guys" in terms of specifications and features.
